I’m the founder of Creative Commons netlabel Vulpiano Records and I work for Rate Your Music / Sonemic as Community and Social Media Manager. I am a graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University with an MA in filmmaking and have a BA in Studio Art from San Francisco State University, focusing on digital media and emerging technologies and minoring in sexuality studies. In my art, I often like to explore androgyny and interrogate maleness and submission, often with the aid of what is available for adaptation in the public domain and Creative Commons sphere. In my free time, I love to make bots, playlists, read, and play video games. Art My studies and personal projects involve a mixture of analog and digital techniques, including 35mm photography, digital photography, video art, and collage. Music My own musical interests initially developed through a childhood love of Kraftwerk’s Computer World, playing the keyboard, and learning to play the video game soundtrack tunes of Koji Kondo and Nobuo Uematsu by ear. Through my teen years, I used a variety of guides to shape my interests and help in my quest to find music. The Rate Your Music community and 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die proved particularly influential. Icontributed to the Rate Your Music Ultimate Box Set project, making definitive genre playlists for post-Punk, coldwave, vaporwave, and mod. I am now Community and Social Media Manager at Rate Your Music and regularly curate playlists and highlight user content for the site. I’ve been running the Creative Commons-based netlabel Vulpiano Records since November 2009. Artists from around the world have released works through Vulpiano, including Natural Snow Buildings, Derek Piotr, Calvin Markus, Neurotic Wreck, and Aseptic Void. All releases are hosted on Internet Archive, with select albums also available on Free Music Archive and Bandcamp. Initially created as a place to house unsigned and independent artists Roxie had gotten to know from connecting with friends on social music sites and submissions to their music blog A Future in Noise. These artists got on board with Roxie’s vision of a carefully curated selection of legally free digital music. The music is licensed under Creative Commons to encourage sharing of this fabulous music with friends and through blogs and podcasts. Some artists choose to offer pay-what-you-want or limited physical release copies in addition to the digital release. In June 2011, Solange Gularte of Natural Snow Buildings designed a logo of a fox curled up (one eye shut, one watchful eye open) for the netlabel. In brief, it is a Twitter account that you can program to do automated posts, including: responses based on what other users tweet at it, generative text based on sentence structures you determine in the code, and generative images that manipulate variables like color and shape. My first step into making Twitter bots was The Public Tarot, still being tweaked and refined. I have been familiar with bots for so long, being a Twitter user since 2008, that I had not foreseen just how many people I would have to explain what a bot was to until more recently. As soon as I mention "spambots", more people are familiar with the idea of purposefully automated account behavior. If you've ever made a Facebook post about a movie only to have a Facebook 'user' immediately comment WATCH STAR WARS HD &gt;&gt;&gt; CLICK HERE &gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;!!! followed by a dubious link: that was a bot. Automated accounts providing everything from customer service responses, search features, and weather updates such as a host of Facebook messenger accounts are also bots. Bots, however, are much more than spam-generators or customer service helpers. They are also art. One of the first accounts that I assumed was a bot was Horse_ebooks Horse_ebooks was later revealed to have its posts written directly by humans rather than generated from code and new updates ceased. The fact that so many people believed in the accidental beauty generated from bots, however, turns our attention to what actual bots can do. Here, then, are a sampling of my favorite Twitter bots across a variety of categories: text, occult, emoji, and images.
