Vulpiano Records

Vulpiano Records was launched in November 2009 by synth musician Marilyn Roxie. Initially created as a place to house unsigned and independent artists Roxie had gotten to know from connecting with friends on Last.fm and submissions to their music blog A Future in Noise. These artists got on board with Roxie’s vision of a carefully curated selection of legally free digital music. The music is licensed under Creative Commons to encourage sharing of this fabulous music with friends and through blogs and podcasts. Some artists choose to offer pay-what-you-want or limited physical release copies in addition to the digital release. In June 2011, Solange Gularte of Natural Snow Buildings designed a logo of a fox curled up (one eye shut, one watchful eye open) for the netlabel.

Vulpiano Records is now available in its entirety on Internet Archive and a selection of 256kbps+ releases is available on Free Music Archive. We are proudly participating with special releases for Netlabel Day on July 14th, 2017.

VULPIANO RECORDS for Netlabel Day

Vulpiano Records Artists and Newcomers —

Vulpiano Records is once again participating in Netlabel Day. Last year’s event was a great success with 4 widely downloaded exclusive releases. I would love for some Vulpiano folks to join me once again for this very cool event on July 14th, 2017. If you are an artist that has not yet released with Vulpiano, here is your chance to participate!

This year’s deadline for participating is Friday, June 23rd 2017. You can release a single, EP, album, or compilation with Vulpiano. If you’re interested, please send along a ZIP file (320kbps+ mp3s and/or lossless WAVs for converting into mp3 and FLAC only) and any details about your album you’d like people to know before the deadline to marilynroxie [at] gmail.com.

Netlabel Day is an event initiated by the Chilean netlabel, M.I.S.T. Records where international netlabels come together to put out a flurry of high quality releases to celebrate netlabels and Creative Commons releases. More information is available here: https://netlabelday.blogspot.com/

The release must be a digital exclusive for Vulpiano licensed with Creative Commons. The standard Vulpiano license is Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives, which means people can share but not modify the work or use it commercially, though you can request any other Creative Commons license you like.

Please do let me know if you’re interested in participating, have any questions.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Derek Piotr – Precurs [Single] (VULP-0093)

Derek Piotr – Precurs [Single] (VULP-0093)

Vulpiano Records is delighted to have Derek Piotr return for a re-release of “Precurs”. Originally appearing as a track on Alias Splinters Routine 7 years ago, Piotr has remixed the track and remastered the 2010 version.

A note from Derek Piotr:

before i officially [as i see it now] launched my solo career, i did a noise-and-spoken-word project during much of 2009 and released it on vulpiano records feb 19, 2010. one track has always stuck out for me from that project, a duet with Carahanni, “precurs” . i decided to resurrect and do a solo only version of this weird little track in honor of the project turning 7, as well as “remixing” the original photos i took for the artwork of lichen mimicking a circuit board. and happy to say after all this years i can still call vulpiano home. wolf piano!!

Interview by Keith Helt for the Netlabel Interview Project

What is your name?

Marilyn Roxie.

Where are you located?

San Francisco, California.

Do you save any materials – digital files, emails, physical materials – related to your netlabel? Are you interested in organizing or archiving them?

I have all files at the highest quality from Vulpiano Records backed up on two external hard drives and all email in a labeled folder. I feel like the Vulpiano site, Internet Archive, and Free Music Archive are fairly sufficient for archiving, while I consider the emails personal.

How and when did you first learn about netlabels?

I would have been either 18 or 19 (2008/2009) and I’m thinking it would’ve been through browsing music blogs or Last.fm.

Do you remember which music blogs you were reading around 2008 and 2009 that were talking about netlabel releases?

Aside from New Music Strategies and Andrew Dubber‘s writing more generally, I definitely used the MOG Music Network, Hype Machine, and elbo.ws, which are more aggregation engines that collect/ed blog mp3 uploads rather than being ‘blogs’ in themselves, to find a lot of music, which I’m sure included netlabel releases. Phlow was one of my A Future in Noise blogroll links and would’ve been an early spot I saw mention of that, though I’ve not checked it out in a long time; you can see an old version of Phlow here where that’s evident.

Do you feel like more or less or the same amount of blogs are talking about netlabels now compared to 2008?

I remember seeing a lot more about unsigned artists who were self-releasing music and of course content about mainstream releases, rather than much about netlabels specifically, and I suppose that’s a big reason why I thought Vulpiano would be a good idea: to wrangle up quality unsigned artists into one spot. I feel like there is a much greater awareness and discussion of netlabels than there was in 2008/2009 thanks to social media, archiving sites and directories like Free Music Archive and clongclongmoo, initiatives like Netlabel Day – the list goes on.

What was the first netlabel you heard of?

That’s a very good question. I’m not entirely sure if there was a specific netlabel I was a fan of before starting my own. I had some awareness of 8bitpeoples. I know for sure I read Andrew Dubber’s 2008 New Music Strategies article on netlabels when I was starting to think about it.

VULPIANO RECORDS, VUKOVAR – THE THREE SHADES (VULP-0086)

the-three-shadesVukovar – The Three Shades (VULP-0086)

With ‘The Three Shades’, Vukovar emerge once more from amongst the ruins of fallen industry and issue a proclamation: but rather than spell it out, these hushed voices speak in concrete-language. To understand you must submit to the subliminal.

This time the trio are joined by 80’s cult movie star, ‘Queen of the B’s’ Dawn Wildsmith; truly a match made in purgatory.

‘The Three Shades’ is a glimpse into Vukovar’s ever evolving creative processes, where the minimal is maximalist and all things real and unreal are just grist for the mill.

The release is also accompanied by the quiet, occult splendor of b-side “33/08/45 Mourning of the Conqueror”.

Vukovar come from the Brutalist wastelands in the North of England. Ultra-Realism. Depravity. Monotony. Concrete. Hedonism. Silence. Vukovar are idealists, voyeurs and totalitarians. Formed in 2014. Vukovar are Rick Clarke, Dan Shea, and Buddy Preston.

Golden Grey – Greenish Blue (VULP-0085)

From the forthcoming 2017 release Colours comes the single track, “Greenish Blue” by Golden Grey. Providing a sample of what to expect in the soon-to-be future, along with the never before released b-side, “Underpass”. Golden Grey has been compared to artists such as C148 and Ratatat, while maintaining a sound unique all on its own. It’s ambient electronic music that builds towards epic finales, leaving the listener wanting more. Follow-up to Awaken the Wolf.

Bio and Background Information:

Golden Grey is an electronic journey through soft bells and glitchy rhythms conveying an outcome of emotion. The debut album “Awaken The Wolf” contains five tracks, each sculpted carefully to impress. Golden Grey’s identity remains a mystery but that makes the music that much more intriguing. It’s electronic music that is simple, yet cinematic, inspired by artists such as Tennyson, Baths and Tycho.

Interview by Rave and Roll Blog with Marilyn Roxie and Dan Wreck

Anyone who has followed this blog over the years knows that I have a huge soft spot for 80s alternative music, synthesizers, musicians who think outside of the box, and sultry British voices. When Marilyn Roxie (founder/creator of net music label Vulpiano Records) asked me to review Neurotic Wreck’s latest compilation, I must say I hit the lottery on all counts.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Vulpiano Records – Sampler EP Vol. 6 (VULP-0080)

tumblr_o9bc2nfza91qaikyto2_r1_500Vulpiano Records – Sampler EP Vol. 6 (VULP-0080) collects music from the netlabel’s releases March 2016 through June 2016. With some familiar faces returning like Raúl Díaz Palomar, North Hive, Ava Zandieh, Neurotic Wreck, and Zapa, some new artists have arrived as well: Thorn1, Fake Cats Project and band member Kirill Makushin’s solo work, and Golden Grey. Ambient, acoustic, electronic and experimental sounds dominate the release, making it a good encapsulation of the primary areas of focus Vulpiano has become known for.

Note: Previous tracks by Kirill Makushin “Wake” and “Where?” have been removed at request from the artist.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Golden Grey – Awaken the Wolf (VULP-0078)

tumblr_o8xgy3HnkA1qaikyto1_500I am pleased to present this exciting new instrumental electronic release on Vulpiano, Awaken the Wolf by Golden Grey. Falling at times somewhere between C418’s Minecraft soundtrack and Ratatat’s LP3, and at others somewhere off in outer space, the release is introspective, calming, and a little mysterious.

2. Skyward

3. Slow-Motion

4. Don’t Stop Running

5. Awaken The Wolf

“Awaken The Wolf” is the first offering by Golden Grey to Vulpiano Records and portrays a diverse sound in music. The third track, “Slow-Motion”, is a moody piece comprised of a leisurely tempo which inevitably builds up to an epic finale. Meanwhile, “Don’t Stop Running” is upbeat and pop-esque compared to the bulk of the music on the album.

All tracks are recorded / mixed by Golden Grey and mastered by Dan Mabee at Zounds of Sounds Recording Studios.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Kirill Makushin – Infection! (VULP-0077)

tumblr_o8gprzcE7k1qaikyto1_500

Following up from Fake Cats Project’s Temptations released on Vulpiano Records last week, here comes the first full-length solo album from Kirill Makshin. Kicking off with four impassioned, bite-sized string pieces à la Man With a Movie Camera and moving into vocal pieces with haunting, submerged vocals, Infection! is certainly one of the most challenging and off-the-wall Vulpiano releases yet.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Zapa – The Long Trick (VULP-0075)

tumblr_o5quze5Gng1qaikyto1_500Zapa – The Long Trick (VULP-0075)

Zapa’s The Long Trick is a new acoustic album from Zapa. I have been consistently blown away by his talents since his early release at the very beginning of Vulpiano Records in 2009. Zapa has also released a tribute to poet W. B. Yeats in 2013, with poetry sung and set to music.

Zapa’s voice and command of the guitar is beautiful and always impressive, particularly on my favorite track on the album “Ghosts”. Do yourself a favor and pick up this release if you are interested in folk with heart that hearkens back to old-school folk and, at times, psychedelic sensibilities.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Neurotic Wreck – Priceless, Bloody Priceless (VULP-0074)

tumblr_o5oxanmGcL1qaikyto1_500New EP from Neurotic Wreck, a stop-gap before a special Netlabel Day release in July and a kind of “tribute” to Record Label Day. following up from I’m Laura Palmer on Vulpiano Records back in 2013. Now Dan Wreck is partner of label founder Marilyn Roxie, who is pleased to present another release from Wreck once more.

Download or stream on Bandcamp:

A message from Neurotic Wreck:

A collection of new tracks put together for you to listen to while queueing up outside a shop you ignore the other 364 days of the year to buy an overpriced reissue of something by an established act on a major label in the name of independence.

Various articles which can be easily found highlighting the problem of pressing plants being unable to print up releases on indie labels due to being booked up with majors repressing collections of old b-sides on white vinyl.

This release comes ahead of another free release from me, a full length album called Glow Ghosts In Subspace coming out on the 14th of July (Netlabel Day) on Marilyn Roxie’s Vulpiano Records. Sandalphon will be coming out on Small Bear Records in Autumn, more details to follow.

VULPIANO RECORDS, North Hive – Arrow (VULP-0073)

Note about release from North Hive:

I think, while working on this release I’ve finally approached the line beyond which my own role in the process of creation is minimized. During two working months the overall concept was changed so many times, that I’ve finally realized there’s no need for it. Sometimes the material seemed to evolve separately, on its own, leaving me only a mechanical work to record what was happening.

About project:

North hive is an electro-acoustic project established on May 2012 in Saint-Petersburg. The project is vigorously developing within such directions of electronic music as Ambient, Drone and Soundscape. Great attention is paid to details of the sound atmosphere and timbral modulation. The project is principally engaged in studio work and sound design, and takes part in different audio-visual installations as well.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Thorn1 – The Leave of Leaves (VULP-0072)

tumblr_o43t38bNnT1qaikyto1_500Thorn1 – The Leave of Leaves (VULP-0072)

Note from Evgeny Zheyda:

This album finally threatens to regenerate into something you do not expect. I tried to put maximal honesty and sincerity in The Leave of Leaves and to create music I want to listening to. Without any allowances.

From post-punk to enveloping drone and post-rock, from electronic to raw guitars. But it’s not a post-rock, it’s not a slowcore, it’s not fully lo-fi indie. And it’s not willfully eclectic unlike previous albums, and the sound is now much more serious. The Leave of Leaves has a stem and base, tangible from any point.

I believe that this is a pop music of post-modernity, its leitmotif – the cultural and social exclusion. Chopped phrases in Russian and English bares an internal confusion and retrospective look in which I found myself. The farther into the forest, the inaccessible reference points becomes, the more foreigner you become into the forest, the more blurred distant voices heard. The Leave of Leaves is an attempt to build a hut and call someone to become your guest. At least a couple of birds.

14-40
***
Save
Names, distances and dates.
We will forty, there will be rain,
Warm August and thunder.

The album is a logical development of the concept a musician uses for several years. His first works were recorded on a cheap mp3-recorder and were quite harsh lo-fi. Now the primary device is a smartphone (quality defects hardly noticeable – thanks to the experience). Perhaps an author still have to move into the studio and to polish music finally.

Recorded, mixed and mastered in september of 2014 – june of 2015 at home.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Raúl Díaz Palomar – Maqbara (VULP-0071)

tumblr_o3uokiYBN61qaikyto1_500Raúl Díaz Palomar – Maqbara (VULP-0071)

The second beautiful instrumental soundtrack from composer Raúl Díaz Palomar to feature on Vulpiano Records, the first being Poder Contra Verdad in 2013, is for another José Ramón Rebollada film: Maqbara. Successfully crowdfunded onVerkami, Maqbara tells the story of the Muslim community’s social and cultural impact in Avila, Spain in medieval times and the archeological unearthing of the Muslim cemetery, the maqbara, in 1999. The film premiered in Ávila on February 26th and 27th, 2016 at the Convention and Exhibition Center Lienzo Norte.

You can find out more about the film on Twitter and Film Affinity. Links to stream or download Palomar’s soundtrack, as complex and powerful as the tale, and further notes from the composer are below.

More information on the film from Film Affinity.

Notes From composer Raúl Díaz Palomar in Spanish and English:

(EN) A selection of the music that I made for “Maqbara” documentary, directed by José Ramón Rebollada.

“Maqbara” is a documentary film which aims to explain the historical and cultural importance of the Moorish community in Avila, and also relate the political intricacies that ruined the place, a very unknown and surprising story. “Maqbara” has the aim to relate with precision and accuracy that process, which had important social and cultural impact on the city.

Mudejars were Muslims who lived and integrated into the Christian kingdoms until the Catholic Kings enacted the pragmatics of expulsion or forced conversion to Christianity in 1502.

The most important mudejars community in the Kingdom of Castile was from Ávila, both quantitatively and qualitatively. For 200 years they were an active and peaceful community that left cultural footprints in the city. The most important material testimony that remained was their “maqbara”, the Muslim cemetery was discovered archaeologically in 1999. It is so far the most important Muslim medieval necropolis discovered in Spain, 3,171 corpses were exhumed in total.

The discovery of the archaeological site occurred following the project to urbanize the area where it was located. After the finding, there was a controversy centered on whether or not retain the maqbara and create a cultural park to remind the presence and importance of the Avila Mudejar community.

This position was held by multiple specialists, entities and Spanish and foreign institutions, including the universities of Valladolid, Salamanca, Madrid and Oxford, or the Ministry of Culture of France. Despite these pronouncements both the municipal government of Avila and the regional executive from Castilla y León chose to fully excavate the site, document and destroy it, in order to build the planned urbanization.

VULPIANO RECORDS, DYR FASER – DYR FASER Volume 1 (VULP-0069)

coverDYR FASER – DYR Faser Volume 1 (VULP-0069)

DYR FASER’s initial release for Vulpiano Records is a compilation of tracks from October 2015 through January 2016. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, DYR FASER is Eric Bøømhower, joined by Thalia Zedek on guitar in “Kōsō Biru” and in live performances playing guitar and singing vocal harmonies.

DYR FASER Volume 1 is a wonderful swirl of synth and guitar, each song a dark, dangerous world of texture to get lost inside of. This is really one of the releases that I’ve been most proud of for Vulpiano. Listen for yourself.

Zedek has fronted bands Live Skull, Uzi, and Come and currently fronts The Thalia Zedek Band and E. Bøømhower’s influences range from krautrock to the dark psychedelia of Suicide and Spacemen 3.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Bisamråtta – Försiktigt (VULP-0056)

Bisamråtta’s latest Vulpiano release is the two track Försiktigt/Manetar EP, following up on Bisamråtta (2013) and their first solo EP (2012). “Försiktigt” is beautiful and ghostly, a William Basinski-esque loop and spiral – 21 minutes of blissful oblivion. “Manetar” is more peaceful and compact, evoking a sensation of traveling while sitting still.

VULPIANO RECORDS, J.G. Hackett – Shadow Torture (VULP-0055)

(VULP-0055) The second single pulled from J.G. Hackett’s The Sins of Science, Shadow Torture is a stand-out track from the release, grandiose and somehow pretty and fragile at the same time, perhaps because of the lyrical content and intent behind the song. Hackett says: “This piece reflects on the difficulties of coping with internal pain and anxiety while trying to maintain an outer aura of competence – “I want nothing more than a stable mind, tired of waiting for justice.” Also presented here is b-side “Knife” and an instrumental of “Shadow Torture”.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Natural Snow Buildings – The Night Country (VULP-0054)

tumblr_nhh07f8ykb1qaikyto1_5001

Natural Snow Buildings – The Night Country (VULP-0054)

Originally self-released and super-limited in quantity on CD, this is the official, Vulpiano Records digital release of Natural Snow Buildings’ The Night Country. Available in FLAC or 320 kbps MP3 and includes art from the cover and insert. The Night Country has been one of my personal favorite recent Natural Snow Buildings releases so I am very pleased Mehdi and Solange have made it available through Vulpiano.

“No Light Pollution” comes on gradually, a spooky tunnel of sound. providing glimpses of what’s to come. Songs like “Weird Meetings at teh Water Castle” and “You’ll Become What You Fear the Most” are shimmering and richly textured. We go into the light for a brief moment in the vocal tracks “Where Your Body Split”, “Where Your Body Split” and “Eli’s Song”, though there is a harrowing ambivalence in “Rusty Knives Valley”. The cover and insert art is recalled when hearing the spiraling, droney “Season of the Slasher” conjuring up images easily of a scary, mystical world.

The title track is resplendent with the dark beauty you have come to expect and treasure from NSB. “Sister Ritual” has the chilling touch that recalls elements of previous release Daughter of Darkness. “Sandman Traps”, another vocal track, is a good follow-up to this and another illustration of the group’s mastering of alternating the hopeful and the haunted. The album closes with “Gothic Suburbia”, more peaceful than most of the earlier instrumental tracks, still spacious and gorgeous.

The Night Country is all in all an outstanding entry in the Natural Snow Buildings discography and a good introduction to the band for those who are a bit intimidated by the band’s longer releases without missing out on any of the key ingredients

VULPIANO RECORDS, J.G. Hackett – The Sins of Science (VULP-0053)

J.G. Hackett – The Sins of Science (VULP-0053) Following recent Vulpiano Records single Bootleg Romanticism, here comes J.G. Hackett with his first album for the label in 3 years. The Sins of Science is designed to be as overproduced as possible. My inspiration for this was Tears for Fears’ 1989 album The Seeds of Love, which has always been one of my absolute favourites. The album is packed with glossy, infectious tunes that could all be potential radio hits. Indeed, the opener “Shadow Torture” is full of the kind of pomp you would expect from such a description, cinematic and glorious. “Our Last Chance” is wistful and more than a little Manic Street Preachers Lifeblood era-esque. “A Higher State” is mystical, a kind of neo-psychedelic, twinkling Talk Talk. “Feel the Pain” has an unusual structure, with a haunting and driving bassy riff repeating throughout despite the up-beat nature of the instrumentation otherwise – the lyrics tell the story properly: “You played with knives too often to care You build your soul with none to share You fade into the gray We’re never gonna make it – alright?” – while “Breaking” is a sweet and melodic bright piano tune. “The Sins of Science” appears to be a call to question faith and devotion, and appeal to reality and sonically a great representation bringing together the whole of the album. The Sins of Science closes with “Homecoming”, a warm and sentimental piece. All in all, the album is an incredible release from an independent artist and I am honored to have J.G. Hackett as part of the Vulpiano roster.

Mirror on Mediafire: https://www.mediafire.com/?9i3rf9bi4fzrig9 Further details on the tracks from J.G. Hackett:

1. Shadow Torture: This piece reflects on the difficulties of coping with internal pain and anxiety while trying to maintain an outer aura of competence – “I want nothing more than a stable mind, tired of waiting for justice”.

2. Bootleg Romanticism: This song is all about my failed adolescent attempts at writing art-pop with a friend – “and all our architects and axioms could never make us whole”.

3. Our Last Chance: One of the defining traits of adults is a lack of ability to stop and appreciate the moment. The importance of realising that the present will never come again is the main theme of this song. “This could be our final time, let’s get it right together and keep away the shadows of forever.“

4. Higher State: A mood piece reflecting the tumultuous state of our minds – the various states we can experience, sometimes within the space of a few minutes (or in this case, around 5 minutes!).

5. Feel The Pain: “You won’t stop to feel the pain, you never tried to explain”. This number covers the hurt and questioning that follows the end of a friendship. 6. Breaking: This piece is all about mental illness – “everything inside you is breaking”. 7. The Sins Of Science: One man’s questioning of his religious upbringing. Who’s responsible? The Sins of Science! “They are yours”. 8. Homecoming: My wife and I have a shared ambition to move to the country and enjoy peace, space and tranquility. This song is a heartfelt exploration of that desire.

VULPIANO RECORDS, J.G. Hackett – Bootleg Romanticism (VULP-0052)

J.G. Hackett – Bootleg Romanticism (VULP-0052)

Bootleg Romanticism is J.G. Hackett’s first release for Vulpiano since Trans-Racial Impression back in 2011. This single contains “Bootleg Romanticism” and b-side “Across the Ages”, both slick and catchy and nodding towards the tropes of rock production. The release is in anticipation of his upcoming album, The Sins of Science, nearly four years in the making. Hackett says:

The album this comes from – “The Sins of Science”, is designed to be as overproduced as possible. My inspiration for this was Tears for Fears 1989 album The Seeds of Love, which has always been one of my absolute favourites. The song is about my early days trying to write songs with a friend. We were often overambitious beyond our talents so within the lyrics are references to the titles of the songs we wrote at the time.

VULPIANO RECORDS, North Hive – Immersion (VULP-0051)

North Hive – Immersion (VULP-0051)

Immersion is a beautiful little album. It unravels slowly in its title track opener with sounds recalling nature, looping and enveloping, repetition morphing into change, and — later — voices. Spring-like and peaceful.

“Immersion” fades into the meditative “Hyperborea”, rippling waves of sound carrying the listener onward (and is that kittens I hear?). “Satellite” seems to depart from earth, off into space, more whirring and chaotic than the others, but chaos too is natural, perhaps the most natural thing of all.

“Larva” is the most unsettling piece here, as cavernous and creepy-crawly as one would expect from the title. It tumbles into “Serenity”, which finishes the album. Much darker than Immersion began, the serenity here is touched with a bright piano and spacey twinklings in the background.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Bisamråtta’s self-titled LP (VULP-0048)

Bisamråtta’s self-titled LP (VULP-0048) follows up his solo EP released last year on Vulpiano Records. Bisamråtta (Vlad Luchansky, Russia) has a style that is subtle and sweet in the ambient caresses and static that travel in and out of your ear while listening…Some songs are more floating and difficult to grasp, though no less pleasing, than others: for example, the transition between the pleasantly drifting opener “Lunga Blockera” and the more rhythmically driven “Hud Uppfatta” is striking.

Electronics, atmospheric noise and sung or spoken snippets, and guitar are all used to great effect onBisamråtta. Luchansky has here crafted another beautiful work that rings loud — and, importantly soft — of the natural world, the body (note the song titles and cover art, and emotion.

VULPIANO RECORDS, guinpens – Bubbles (VULP-0047)

guinpens – Bubbles (VULP-0047) is the first Vulpiano release from this mysterious, quietly prolific artist; I heard a revolving door of quite sonically different possible album selections for the label before this remastered release was selected. Bubbles is difficult to pin down – “experimental” is such a large catch-all, not nearly descriptive enough. As with all of the artists on Vulpiano, this guinpens release is a fine testament to the creative feats and that the self-made artist can achieve.

Perhaps the tags “kids” and “hell” provided on guinpen’s Bandcamp provide a better idea of what to expect? Indeed, the mood alternates between pleasantly tuneful and sweet, if trippy, and something darker, “Creepshow” providing my favorite blend of these two sides. Multi-layered instrumentation and echoing vocals, Bubbles is an all around pleasant change of pace and yet another reminder of why I enjoy bringing content to you on Vulpiano.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Zapa – Words: A Tribute to W.B. Yeats (VULP-0046)

Zapa – Words: A Tribute to W.B. Yeats (VULP-0046) is a beautiful acoustic album, setting the poetry of William Butler Yeats to music. Miguel Zapata hails from Spain and is now located in London. This is the second Zapa release on Vulpiano Records after quite awhile, the first being 2009 compilation Songs 2006-2009. VULPIANO RECORDS, Aseptic Void – Carnal (VULP-0045)

Aseptic Void – Carnal (VULP-0045) is out now. Italian multi-instrumentalist Davide T, known here as Aseptic Void, has followed up their previous Vulpiano Records EP Alone with an impressive continuation of dark themes and masterful use of static, haunting spaces in their music, including silence.

The theme of the album is the flesh and abominations of the concepts of limit. A black hole of anti-identity in which to get pleasantly lost. The truth of the flesh is multifaceted.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Neurotic Wreck’s I’m Laura Palmer EP (VULP-0044)

Neurotic Wreck’s I’m Laura Palmer EP (VULP-0044) is the latest offering from the talented UK singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dan Wreck. After positively reviewing his previous music submission Leave Tonight Mixtape Side 2 on A Future in Noise, I was immediately interested in a future Neurotic Wreck release becoming part of the Vulpiano library. Here it is – four tracks that showcase his eclectic sound well, from spooky synth work (“I’m Laura Palmer”) to his impassioned and melancholic singer-songwriter approach (“My Reason to Believe”, “Crowned”) and even a slice of girl-group-esque sweetness (“Show Me Who Broke Your Heart”).

VULPIANO RECORDS, Aseptic Void’s Alone (EP) (VULP-0042)

Aseptic Void’s Alone (EP) (VULP-0042) is out now on Vulpiano Records. This haunting EP comes from Italian multi-instrumentalist Davide T, who has also performed the soundtrack for video game Slender’s Woods; it is worth noting that two of the tracks from the EP come fromthe aforementioned soundtrack (“Lullaby” and “Incubazione”). Keep watch for another Aseptic Void release coming to Vulpiano in January 2013.

About Alone from Sounds Behind the Corner:

The dark mood of the four tracks represents the artist (composer of music for videogames and short films, among the other things), who, in an introspective catharsis, discovers the concept of his music: minimal ambient fractionated on levels of epidermic perception.

Once again Sounds Behind The Corner draws a line, from the pages of the website, that wants to reach out the readers, yet illuminating another label-less artist in the Italian panorama, a feature which we would like to keep as a practice to grow in mutual respect with the artists.

“Alone” is composed of four tracks, developing a theme: the immersion in the dark introspection is the cure to our anxieties, our fears, a praxis as old as man, archaic as the darkness itself, a shamanic practice viewed today as shady symphonic composition. Good listening.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Hanetration‘s Torn Heat EP (VULP-0041)

Hanetration‘s Torn Heat EP (VULP-0041) full of delightfully gauzy textures – dreamlike and at times sinister. Based in London, UK, Hanetration has crafted a work of interest to glitch, drone, and ambient fans alike with this EP. Torn Heat EP is a strong follow-up to Tenth Oar EP (self-released earlier this year), including four tracks that thematically build off of one another, from the minimal, yet adventurously engaging “Jurassic” to the closer “Flicker”, functioning as a haunting deconstruction of the music that came before.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Tim Doyle’s Micro-Brew (VULP-0040)

Tim Doyle’s Micro-Brew (VULP-0040) is an album from an incredibly prolific artist of experimental fractal music out now on Vulpiano Records. He has been active on Last.fm in particular, not only releasing his own music, but in creating a diverse array of radio stations (see also The Radio Room) of everything from New Edge (“New Age that’s not elevator music”) to Chappaqua (“spoken word, avant-garde, post-romantic, noise, drone”).

Download here: http://archive.org/details/TimDoyle-Micro-brew2012

Background on the tracks from Tim Doyle:
The original sequences are utterly determined by the presets in the MusiNum program, and the result was then converted from MIDI to MP3 with a blend of soundfonts and the MP3, originally twelve-tone, was in turn subject to fairly simple editing procedures to create the first piece, “Get a Grip”. As those procedures included continuous deformation of pitch, and the layering of differently countoured results, it was at that point that they became microtonal.

The pieces form a unified whole despite their different emotional affects, but only the unconscious can fully appreciate that unity. The best way to appreciate them is simply to let them be, like a natural phenomenon observed.

“Get a Grip” is simply a reference to the initial disorientation that the microtonal environment evokes, together with the rhythmic deformations that make it difficult to pin any single tone down and anchor it in pitch-and-time space.

“Shellshock” refers in my mind not so much to the WWI experience as to the aftermath of a B-52 bombing raid, which I read sometime leaves any physically unharmed survivors wandering around in a state of disorientation produced by the pure sonic assault, now ended.

“Agoraphobe” is simply a trip from the safety of home to the scary outside world which seems to overwhelm the agoraphobe and come at him without warning from every direction… at last the process is reversed and we again melt into the quiet and safety of home base.

“Fogblind” created an image in my mind of being at the water’s edge in a port town early in the morning when not only is the entire scene blocked by the fog, but the sounds of the busy city itself reach one only in a muted and attenuated form. It is not at all an unpleasant sensation. Anyone who has lived in a harbor town can appreciate it. (Mine are Buffalo, Milwaukee, and San Francisco.)

About Tim Doyle:
Tim Doyle was born Feb. 12, 1949 in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the oldest of nine children, and spent his childhood in a rural setting on a heavily wooded lake.

He has been making music in one form or another since childhood, when he soloed in a performance of his piano concerto âRhapsody #1â at age 9 in a school production, and had a band piece called âRough Draftâ performed a few years later.

He turned to jazz and blues piano in his teens, but although he studied music theory and composition, he majored in mathematics, his first love, receiving his B.A. in 1968. He was always intrigued by the connections between music and math, and made some early experiments at computer composition in the late sixties.

His love for jazz deepened when he discovered the Blue Note catalog at age 20, starting with Jimmy Smith, Art Blakeyâs Jazz Messengers, Lee Morgan, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Bill Evans. He still plays keyboard in various styles, but has not recorded his improvised music.

In 1999, he ran across a relatively simple fractal music generative program called Musinum, created by Dr. Lars Kindermann in Germany, who left it available as freeware and then moved on to other projects. Most of the sample music created by Musinum users was brief and (with a few notable exceptions) primitive, but the power inherent in the algorithms employed intrigued Doyle.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Bisamråtta’s self-titled release (VULP-0039)

Bisamråtta’s self-titled release and their first solo offering (VULP-0039) is out now – a beautiful selection of ambient drone tracks: 1. “Dissolve”, 2. “Rörelse av Ljus”, and “3. Sky With Milk”. Bisamråtta (Vlad Luchansky from Russia) describes his approach:

…since age of 14 I’ve been keen on jazz and always been dedicated to improvisation. While studying music for myself, I’ve managed to play with local and foreign improvisers but I still wanted to expand myself. And then I’ve discovered shoegaze and postrock. These genres are pretty inspiring and it took three years for me to combine and develop different style of playing. While I’m still listening a lot of various music, I play mostly free improvisation with other people, newgaze in a trio called ”Kometjakten“ and ambient in solo.

I am very pleased to be adding another fine instrumental release to the Vulpiano catalog.

VULPIANO RECORDS, King Elizabeth’s MIAMI (VULP-0038)

tumblr_lyjcowMTjf1qaikyto1_400

King Elizabeth’s MIAMI (VULP-0038) is the follow-up to previous Vulpiano Records release Obsessive Desires (2011). King Elizabeth is a true solo artist, performing all the vocals and instrumentation, beginning in 2002 in Staffordshire, England. With influences including Joy Division, The Cure, U2, Stone Roses, The Associates, Comsat Angels, and John Digweed, the sounds of MIAMI hearken back to the heyday of post-punk and synth-pop, but without forgoing a modern edge and individual style. MIAMI opens gradually with a creeping electro-industrial tune, “On These Streets”. Stand-out tracks “Fame”, “The American”, and “Blue Lagoon” incorporate funky guitar elements into a dreamy a synth soundscape. “Miami Sunrise” closes the album nicely with a combination of aspects found across this album that make it so enjoyable – an extended intro, danceability, and insistent vocals.

VULPIANO RECORDS, the narrow musketeer’s self-titled release (VULP-0037)

the narrow musketeer’s self-titled release (VULP-0037) is out now! The new incarnation of Le Fils des Trois Mousquetaires (Belgium) includes some Le Fils tracks reworked and mastered, while preserving a lo-fi atmosphere and even making use of background noise to create a faux violin effect (“ripper wave”), as well as new material. As ever, the artist is shrouded in obscurity, greeting the potential listener with a surreal net art-savvy cover. the narrow musketeer is melancholy, melodic, and mysterious, beginning with a a stand-out opener, “ripper wave”, and carried forth with sweet sadness in songs like “easy girl”, “entomology”, and “rockets”. Grunge-esque “porcelain flu” turns the mood around in a surprisingly fun direction, before the mood slowly shifts back to the tender acoustics the narrow musketeer is so adept at, with “the island”. Overall, the narrow musketeer has succeeded in honing a sound and mood of their own, unafraid to add in a few surprises (“porcelain flu” and several curious interlude tracks) in between.

VULPIANO RECORDS, The Long Afternoon – Swinging Singles (VULP-0035)

The Long Afternoon originally formed as an indie rock group in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1985. Dissolving in the late ‘80s, guitarist and vocalist Eston Martz carried on studying music and, inspired by the reunions of Wire and Mission of Burma, Martz returned to the studio and reformed The Long Afternoon with drummer Greg Elliott and former Seen bassist Jeff Edmunds. The band released The Luxury Problem (2006) andSignifying Nothing (2009), with third album An Index of Maladjustments (2011) coming August 16, 2011.

Swinging Singles (VULP-0035) is an EP compilation of tracks from previous Long Afternoon releases The Luxury Problem (“That’s Not What You Said”, “On the Plane”) and Signifying Nothing (“Never Tell”, “Intent”, “How Did I Get So Far From Where I Should Have Been”, “Bother”). Swinging Singles shows off the variety in mood and style the Long Afternoon are capable of, from angular, spirited and fiery (“On a Plane”) to cinematic and mood-lifting (“Bother”). An excellent introduction to the band.

tumblr_lmuxwhWKjA1qaikyto1_400

Following single release “Homecoming” on Vulpiano Records, King Elizabeth’s full length album Obsessive Desires (VULP-0032) is out now. A solo artist playing all instruments and performing all vocals, King Elizabeth’s adeptness at establishing an atmosphere of vintage post-punk and synth-rock coolness, interpreted through a unique, modern lens. Stand-out tracks like “Obsession”, “Carnival”, “Homecoming”, “Hurricanes”, and “Elusive You” profoundly illustrate the variety of moods found on this LP, from despair to hope and cycling around again, ultimately “an atmospheric journey which is dark, with shimmering flecks of light.”

VULPIANO RECORDS, Fire Island Pines – Bratislava EP (VULP-0027)

Six-piece UK band Fire Island Pines’ debut release Bratislava EP (VULP-0027) comes from Anton Rothschild (vocals and guitar; he previously released one of his solo albums, The Year of the Kitten, on Vulpiano Records in 2010), and “a band of Cornish indie wanderers”, Andy (drums), Ben (trumpet, flugel horn, percussion), Seamus (bass, glockenspiel), Simon (guitar), and Tom (guitar, vocals). The EP contains five tracks which each serve to signal the talent the band has for weaving smooth, compelling – and nd sometimes groovable, as in the case of “Heaven Till You Say” – songs.

From their press release: “Together [Fire Island Pines] have woven Anton’s bleak lyrics into a jaunty, uplifting sonic tapestry punctuated by shimmering trumpet lines and an unholy tri-guitar wall-of-jangle. The result; a distinctive yet accessible bittersweet pop parcel, is showcased to devastating effect on their debut release Bratislava…Fire Island Pines will be playing live throughout 2011 with plans to release a full-length album before the year is out…” Cover art is by BreeAnn Veenstra.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Richey Hackett’s – Flawed Above Bored (VULP-0026)

Following the single release of the same title, VULP-0026 is Richey Hackett’s eighth album Flawed Above Bored. Described by Hackett as much more stripped down than his previous release, Flawed finds Hackett rising out of the darkness of Void Songs and into lighter atmosphere even when the subject matter is heavy, with a strong sense of melody (“Breakdown in Communication”) and moving guitar work (“Modern Paranoia”, “Never Gonna Be Famous”). Stand-out tracks here include “Modern Paranoia”, “Flawed Above Bored”, and the churning, mysterious “To Bring Me Around”. Album cover designed by Ben Enser.

VULPIANO RECORDS, J.G. Hackett – Trans-Racial-Impression (VULP-0023)

VULP-0023 is British synth pop/rock artist J.G. Hackett’s third album, Trans-Racial-Impression. In an era of exciting electronic experimentation combined with nods to retro synth styles, this album not only fits in but goes more than a little beyond expectation. With catchy beats and rhythm (“State of Flux”, “Too Many Times”) appearing alongside more harrowing numbers (“Johnny Drank His Own Future”) and truly stand-out tracks that deserve repeating, the previously highlighted “Dereliction” and moving closers “Where To Next?” and more organic sounding “Epitaph of the Architect”. The first album release for Vulpiano Records in the new year is one I’m quite proud of.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Richey Hackett – Void Songs (VULP-0019)

Void Songs (VULP-0019) is British artist Richey Hackett’s seventh album overall, and third release for Vulpiano Records, the previous two being the single from this album, “Softly, Slowly”, and a compilation of previous material, An Introduction to Richey Hackett. The album as described by Hackett is “an experiment outside my comfort zone to see if I could make an entire album without using guitars” and “an examination of all my worst fears, hence why it’s the darkest record I’ve ever made”, a record of his new exploration of incorporating electronics into his music.

The music here ranges from plodding and industrial-tinged (“Inevitable”, “Bad Dream”) to crunchy, catchy electronics (“Face”, “Softly, Slowly”), dark lyrical themes spread throughout. Void Songs is one of Hackett’s best releases yet, vastly different from his other material not only by virtue of the new electronic element, but the promising direction this work appears to betoken for the future of his music.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Tiny Tide – Baltic Avenue (VULP-0018)

Baltic Avenue (VULP-0018) is Italian pop-rock group Tiny Tide’s second offering on Vulpiano Records, the first being the single “The Smiths & The Cure”. The album was originally to be titled Gasoline Alley, says Mark Zonda: “since I was born and I still live in there, but I don’t want to be confused with the Rod Stewart album and song”, which is also pictured on the front cover. Baltic Avenue was cooked up especially for Vulpiano, a charmingly rustic, Beatles-inspired EP.

Download here: http://archive.org/details/TinyTide-BalticAvenue2010

Song lyrics here: http://www.tinytide.com/2010/09/baltic-avenue/

Zonda’s words on the songs’ themes:

“Baltic Avenue” is the name of the cheapest way in Monopoli.
Naming the album as a road familiar to everyone was a tribute to The Beatles’ Abbey Road. The whole EP is, telling the truth, telling in 5 tracks the story of these guys becoming famous, reaching the top to slowly see it fading away. Isn’t it a bit a wider metaphor for life?

“Right Now” is the big hit that made’em famous, a coral song about living our best – still boring – days as well

“I Need Somebody” is from the point of view of John, being sick of celebrity

“Times of trouble” is a sad reflection from Paul with the awareness of losing the great magic that’s about to fade

“… and the stars” Is George having his revenge, reaching his top as songwriter and success.

“Far Away” is about a person (Paul?) living his last days of his life being kissed by a magic song goodbye.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Microscopes – Points of Interest (VULP-0017)

Microscopes is the latest musical endeavor of prolific Rate Your Music artist Chris Hunter and vocalist and lyricist Fred. The cover may yield a clue to the ‘art pop’ genre tag applied to it, evident in splashes throughout VULP-0017, Points of Interest, though it is more of a curious odyssey in lo-fi electro-blues. Wheeling from eerie to romantic, soothing to jarring, Points of Interest is a veritable buffet of rich textures and emotional outpourings, “This is the Night” and “Those Summer Days” being favorite highlights of the lot. One to watch!

VULPIANO RECORDS, Richey Hackett – Softly, Slowly (VULP-0016)

Previously appearing on Vulpiano Records with a compilation spanning his catalog 2007-2010, British independent artist Richey Hackett has just released the new single for his forthcoming album Void Songs (coming September 27th), VULP-0016. Taking an electronica direction, quite a hop from his usual pop-rock style, “Softly, Slowly” is both catchy and unnerving, Hackett’s vocals taking on a haunting quality amidst mesmerizing, hypnotic loops of drums and eerie melodies – one of his best works yet and quite the taster for the album to come! The b-side here is an instrumental, “Years”, mysterious and near-industrial sounding, providing a further glimpse into just how epic Void Songs will be when released in full.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Richey Hackett – An Introduction to Richey Hackett (VULP-0015)

VULP-0015 is a compilation of this UK-based independent artist (in every sense of the term, handling all of the songwriting, instrumentation, vocals, recording, and producing of his works), Richey Hackett, who has somehow been flying under the radar since 2007. Vulpiano Records is, proudly, releasing a compilation of the best songs from his catalog, An Introduction to Richey Hackett. The closing remark on his MySpace profile – “Pop music is dead. And I have come to revive it. Enjoy.” sums up much of his mission; the creation of catchy tunes need not leave out thoughtful lyricism, which has become increasingly abundant in his works over time. His wide array of fabulous influences have certainly lent a hand in shaping him as an artist, and I was pleased to see Elvis Costello amongst them, as that’s who I was reminded of when hearing “Sixteen” particularly, a kindred spirit in pop sensibility surely. An Introduction to… is a monument to his changes and growth over time, my favorites of the lot being “Wrath” (optimistic instrumentation blended with sentiments of distress), “Empty Out the Room” (a plodding and dark piece with some rather memorable guitar bits), and the pseudo-folksy, chugga-chugga rhythm “Coming Home”. His whole catalog is available for free on Last.fm, with another album coming down the pike in summer 2010.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Natural Snow Buildings – The Centauri Agent (VULP-0013)

VULP-0013 is Natural Snow Buildings’ first release of 2010, the free-for-download double LP The Centauri Agent! On part one, the 41 minute “Our man from Centauri” sets the stage, a cosmic, sprawling opener with themes that continue on into “The accidental remote viewer”, before fizzling out into static. Part two is comprised of nine beautiful and intense tracks (particular stand-outs including “The Psychic Circle/Uchronia”, “The storm of resurrection”, and “Solar flares”). Lovely and intricately woven as ever, while frequently heading off into new and challenging sonic territory, Mehdi and Solange have created yet another very special work of musical art with The Centauri Agent!

VULPIANO RECORDS, Derek Piotr – Alias Splinters Routine (VULP-0008)

VULP-0008 is the latest Vulpiano Records release, Derek Piotr’s Alias Splinters Routine. In Derek’s own words…: “my ALIAS project is completed. for over a year i’ve toiled, crafting nine tracks, eight of them short and a longer final piece which incorporated my close friends and I uttering my definition for the word ALIAS: “an alias, that which is an alternate title for a person or object. another name that denotes a new purpose for a familiar thing. this new title may be the result of decisions or pressures either internal or external, and typically affects the associations or properties of that person or object at least somewhat dramatically. this new title can be a symbol of change or can simply occur because the old name has been issued to a replacement object.” I (Marilyn Roxie) even appear in the personnel, reading the definition for “alias” on the 9th track! Derek Piotr is easily one of the most uncompromising artists on Vulpiano thus far, blending field recordings and an array of sound collages, making Alias for a challenging, unique listening experience. Also recorded work under Pi.o.tr – see also related project Derseem (with Carahanni).

VULPIANO RECORDS, Ava Zandieh – Patterns and Drones (VULP-0009)

Vulpiano Records release VULP-0009, Ava Zandieh – Patterns and Drones. Ava (rackandruin on Tumblr) came across Vulpiano Records through me posting about it (as neonsigh). She introduced me to the project which she recorded for International Album Making Month in October of 2009. Patterns and Drones is the final version of that album, with some of the original songs included, some reworked, and brand new ones added in. Patterns and Drones is primarily piano-based and made ethereal through Ava’s soulful, yet light and airy vocals. Peaceful, yet introspective and somber, this album is one of our loveliest releases yet, and one that bears repeated listening.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Anton Rothschild – Year of the Kitten (VULP-0007)

Vulpiano Records release VULP-0007, Anton Rothschild’s The Year of the Kitten. An expert blend of poppy and electronic elements with a dash of melancholy from the start in title track “The Year of the Kitten”, Anton’s newest release is one of his best and certainly an EP I am proud to have part of the catalog here. Anton, also affiliated with the consistently excellent Dainty Records (including release The Diffident, a top independent artist release of 2009 at A Future in Noise) is a master of the melancholy, as his Last.fm bio states: “the bleak heart of his music is nestled delicately within a blanket of cathartic, almost uplifting compositions”. “Eurostentialism” and “The Completist” are truly danceable, while “A Town Beside the Sea” turns the mood more somber and introspective and “Mouser” closes out The Year of the Kitten with a glimmer of hope and calm. My favorite EP of 2010 thus far!

VULPIANO RECORDS, Vito Genovese – Dead Ends and Fire Extinguishers (VULP-0006)

tumblr_kwm4dvqPSC1qaikyto1_400Vulpiano Records release VULP-0006, Vito Genovese – Dead Ends and Fire Extinguishers! Known primarily for a slew of electronic releases on Rate Your Music, Vito has recently put out what is surely his best album yet, blending harrowing lo-fi electronic elements with chugging white noise like steam, and more modern ambient-electronic pieces like “Rainy Bus Stop Afternoon” and “Warehouse Blues”. Recommended for any fan of ambient/electronic and video game soundtracks – download here!

VULPIANO RECORDS, Calvin Markus – Three Days of Sound: Music From the Film (VULP-0005)

Three Days of Sound: Music From the Film (VULP-0005). Calvin Markus is an artist that has featured several times on A Future in Noise in the past, through his work in Dead Times (see also this interview). His most recent work is the soundtrack to the forthcoming film Three Days of Sound (view trailer on Vimeo here). Characteristic of his work in Dead Times, otherworldly, trippy, and soulful, the music seems a perfect fit for this film with a curious concept: “A middle aged, anti-social writer lives his life in seclusion. The tall, open windows in his apartment allow him to observe the bizarre world around him. He documents his dreams and thoughts onto paper using his IBM Selectric. One day, a pesky distraction catches him off guard and he is thrust into pure agony; the complete loss of his hearing in three days. He struggles to find meaning, as the mysteries of himself and the secluded universe around him unfold before his eyes.”

VULPIANO RECORDS, Ian France – High Places (VULP-0004)

tumblr_kwdnfq8kao1qaikyto1_400Another Vulpiano Records release, VULP-0004 is here, Ian France’s High Places/Crackabow single! Ian is one of my favorite independent electronic artists out there right now (he also remixed one of my songs, “Ice Water Girl”), blending remix elements in the context of his original electronic tunes. Catchy, otherworldly, and cool – you can grab it for free here.

VULPIANO RECORDS, Zapa – Songs 2006-2009 (VULP-0003)

Another Vulpiano Records release: VULP-0003, a compilation of tracks from Zapa (originally from Spain, now in the UK), another musician I have collaborated with that I am ~ecstatic~ to have on the label! I previously described him on AFIN as having “a lovely delivery of lyrics, and a softly psychedelic style that is a perfect chill-out soundtrack”. Go have a listen for yourself!

VULPIANO RECORDS, Tiny Tide – The Smiths & The Cure (VULP-0002)

VULP-0002, the first single release from Vulpiano Records: Tiny Tide – The Smiths & The Cure, which is (you guessed it) a sort of tribute to both of those bands, with a particularly spot-on jangly guitar. You can download it here (which includes some alternate versions and a cover of Roxy Music’s “Rain Rain Rain”).

VULPIANO RECORDS, Le Fils des Trois Mousquetaires – pendant ce temps-là, en 1942 (VULP-0001)

Described as “Belgian songs falling from a plane”, this fellow does lovely acoustic tunes that would be perfectly fitting for a rainy day, or should you want to imagine yourself in the midst of a somber film scene with gray, dimly-lit streets around you. Le Fils des Trois Mousquetaires was one of my favorite independent artists on Last.fm when I first heard him months ago and I am very pleased to have his beautiful music be part of this label. How he describes his music: “I’d say I make a crossing between 60’s and 90’s pop, like the Kinks mixed with Nirvana, or Robert Wyatt with Lou Barlow, or the Zombies with Elliot Smith, or Nick Drake with Frank Black…”

Particularly recommended: “Invisible” and “Black Beauty”.
